The Cal State Fullerton men’s basketball program announced Wednesday it acquired the transfer of South Florida freshman Orane Chin.
Chin, a 6-foot-7, 195-pound forward, will be required to sit out 2008-09 but has three years of eligibility left.
Last season, he averaged just 3.9 points (on 35.4-percent shooting from the floor) and 2.9 rebounds in 18 minutes per game, but started in 14 of his 30 appearances as the Bulls won just two of their final 17 outings to finish 12-19.
“His numbers weren’t overwhelming but if you can start in the Big East as a freshman, that’s an indication he can be a pretty good player for us,” CSF head coach Bob Burton said in a news release.
A product of Tampa, Fla.’s Miramar High School, Chin, who came to the U.S. in 1999 from Clarendon, Jamaica, was an all-state honoree in 2006-07 when he averaged 25 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks per contest.
Scout.com ranked him as the 15th-best Florida prospect in his class, and according to Rivals.com, he drew interest from Tennessee, Auburn, Florida, Florida State and Miami.
Of course, CSF’s success last year came from a squad entirely comprised of transfers, six of whom had previously played at the Division I level.
