By Laura Hollander’s standards, anything but a top-10 finish is a bit out of the ordinary.
The sophomore cross-country runner finished 75th at the NCAA Championships on Saturday, a far cry from her ninth-place finish a year ago. The top 40 runners are named All-Americans, meaning Hollander won’t receive the honor as she did in 2012.
Held at LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, Ind., the 6-kilometer women’s race featured 30-degree weather and 20-mph winds. Dartmouth’s Abbey D’Agostino took home the women’s crown.
Hollander, who raced on only four occasions in the past three months, racked up two individual titles this year and finished seventh at the NCAA West Regional on Nov. 15. Hollander won a landslide victory at the Big West Conference championships on Nov. 2.
On the men’s side, senior Chris Frias finished 119th in the 10k race, clocking in at 31 minutes, 26 seconds. Frias finished fewer than two minutes behind the winner, Oregon’s Edward Cheserek.
Frias, the Big West men’s champion, led the pack for Cal Poly all year as he headed into Saturday’s race having notched top-10 finishes in five of six races.
Saturday marked the 14th time a representative from the Cal Poly men’s team competed at the Division I championships.
