Sharon Day might not be the only track and field competitor associated with Cal Poly to represent the United States at the Summer Games in Beijing.
Stephanie Brown Trafton, 28, who graduated from Cal Poly in 2003, had a discus throw of 203 feet, 6 inches at the USA Track and Field/Pacific Association Championships on Sunday.
Brown Trafton, the runner-up at the ’04 Olympic trials, will compete at this year’s trials in Eugene, Ore. from June 27-July 6.
In other track news, it looks as if Cal Poly is interested in Poway High’s Tynan Murray, a multi-sport star who this spring cleared 7-1 in the high jump.
Despite Murray’s football accomplishments, it seems unlikely he’d realistically be given a chance to throw his hat in an already crowded quarterback competition at Cal Poly after incumbent Jonathan Dally graduates following the 2008 season. Of course, his leaping ability — making him only the fifth high jumper in San Diego Section history to clear 7 feet — could come in handy for some QB sneaks.
