The Cal Poly Republicans Club has built a fake Berlin Wall on Dexter Lawn where students have the opportunity to express their thoughts and opinions.
“Looking over this, some of these things, they offend me, they will offend people and it’s important to note that free speech, it can often be quite offensive,” said Nate Honeycutt, president of the Cal Poly Republicans Club. “People don’t have a right to not be offended. We’re just kind of putting this up and just letting people run with it.“
The wall went up on Monday night and since has filled with a variety of comments. The Republicans Club brought the wall back after getting an overwhelming student response last year.
“This year we wanted to make it bigger so more people could write on it and probably next year we’ll make it even bigger because obviously a lot of the students enjoy participating in this,” Honeycutt said.
Not everything on the board is positive and there’s a risk of being vandalized.
“If we just have something where you can just post things anonymously, somebody is bound to abuse it but that doesn’t mean that free speech is a bad thing,” computer science freshman Andrew Tran said. “I think it should still be there.”
Students have started discussions and debates on the board. Everyone is encouraged to write comments until Wednesday night, when it will be torn down.
