The Cal Poly women’s soccer team secured the No. 1 seed in the Big West Conference and won the Big West regular season championship with a 1-0 victory at UC Davis on Thursday.
The team needed the win to top UC Irvine (10-6-0, 5-2-0 Big West) for the outright title. The Anteaters would have needed a win against Cal State Fullerton and a Cal Poly (11-7-0, 7-1-0) loss to remain in the hunt.
But after clinching a share of the Big West championship with a victory at UC Santa Barbara this past Saturday, all the Mustangs needed was a draw to clinch the title outright.
In Thursday’s match, the first half was scoreless while each team got off five shots on goal. In the 41st-minute, Lydia Anderson received a yellow card for Cal Poly.
Sophomore forward Elise Krieghoff scored her 21st goal of the season in the 85th-minute on a cross by Megan Abutin. With little time left in the match, the Aggies (2-4-1, 5-9-3) mustered one last shot on goal, but it flew over the crossbar and out of harms way.
With the victory, the Mustangs will go to Fullerton to play in the semifinals of the Big West Conference tournament starting on Nov. 7. The winner of the four-team tourney will receive a bid to the NCAA tournament.
