CareerFest, a combination of past Career Services events, is an opportunity for students to meet with employers one-on-one to improve their résumés, practice interview techniques and learn what “professional business attire” encompasses.

Cal Poly Career Services has been working with Chevron to prepare CareerFest, an event aimed to prepare students for the upcoming Fall Career Fair and their future careers. There will be more than 60 employers at the event to critique résumés and conduct speed interview sessions. There will also be a complementary lunch for attendants.
During the speed interview component of the event, there will be a panel of 20 employers, and attendants will have a two-minute interview with each of them. When the two minutes are up, they rotate.
“It’s like speed dating, but with interviews,” Carole Moore, Career Services program director and career counselor, said.
While the speed interviews and résumé-checking are going on, there will be models walking the grounds in professional attire, Amie Hammond, career counselor and modeling coordinator for the event, said.
“There will be two pairs of models, each including one female and one male, roaming the event at all times,” Hammond said. “The models are from the American Marketing Association and Hispanic Business Student Association clubs here on campus.”
The models will also be giving out flyers that have information about appropriate workplace clothing.
The complementary lunch will include hot dogs, soft pretzels and root beer, said Tammy Martin, career counselor and main coordinator of the event.
However, students need to participate in CareerFest activities to receive lunch.
“(The lunch is) free for students who attend the event to connect with employers for résumé review and or speed interviewing activities,” Martin said.
Although this is CareerFest’s debut at Cal Poly, Career Services has hosted these types of events in previous years.
At this event, the students had their résumés reviewed and observed models in professional attire.
“We had an espresso shot party,” Moore said.
Attendants were able to drink espresso and join in on speed interviews with employers. CareerFest is essentially a culmination of all the past Career Services events.
The coordinating team’s purpose for this event is “to help students prepare for their job search and the upcoming Fall Career Fair,” according to the description on the Cal Poly Career Services website.
CareerFest will be held in the Multi-Activity Center (MAC) in the Recreation Center (Building 43) on Tuesday, Oct. 8 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
