The Cal Poly swim teams completed the Big West Conference Championships yesterday in Long Beach, with both the men and women having some historic successes.
The men’s team broke 10 school records during the three day meet finishing fifth while the women broke nine records en route to a fourth place conference finish.
Cal Poly freshman Lacey Buck won two individual titles during the met, including the 1650 Free which she finished in 16:34.55, shattering her previous mark by over 16 seconds.
The Mustangs will have most of their top swimmers back next year, losing just one senior from each squad.
Men’s basketball
Pacific 66, Cal Poly 58
The Mustangs were officially eliminated from postseason play when they fell to the Tigers on Saturday in Mott Gym.
Cal Poly (7-19, 3-11 Big West Conference) were led by 13 points a piece from junior forward Charles Anderson and senior forward Titus Shelton.
The Mustangs would capture their only lead of the contest in the first two minutes on a jumper by junior guard Lorenzo Keeler.
The Tigers would lead by as many as 12 points, midway through the first half.
Sophomore guard Shawn Lewis had his second-career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Mustangs.
Cal Poly would get within three points on a steal and dunk by Shawn Lewis with 7:02 remaining, but the Tigers would respond with back-to-back 3-pointers from Michael Kirby and James Doran.
Pacific (16-11, 9-6) had four players in double figures led by Kirby and Doran who each had 12 points.
Softball
Game 1: Cal Poly 4, Indiana 2
Game 2: Cal Poly 1, Nevada 0
In the first game of the day, Indiana (1-15) struck first, but with three runs in the fifth inning, Cal Poly took the lead for good, withstanding a late rally by the Hoosiers on Sunday.
Cal Poly starter Helen Peña evened her record at 3-3 after striking out seven Hoosiers in the win.
Sophomore left-hander Anna Cahn threw a three-hit shutout to propel the Mustangs to a narrow win over the Wolfpack in the afternoon game. Cahn’s performance garnered her a fifth win on the year and put the Mustangs a game over .500 (7-6).
Nevada starter Katie Holverson held Cal Poly to just one hit over the first four frames before the Mustangs rallied for a run on two walks and two singles for the deciding margin.
Cal Poly will open its home schedule with the March 6-8 Mustang Classic. The Mustangs will open the classic at 2 p.m. Friday when they play Temple.
