University Police responded to an on-campus call for medical aid on Friday after a male student fell in the area of the water tower, interim director of public affairs Matt Lazier said on Monday.
Police discovered the student on the ground near Engineering South (building 40) shortly after 7:30 p.m., Lazier said. The student was taken to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center where he was treated for a broken arm and a head injury.
According to hospital spokesperson Ron Yukelson, the student was then transferred to Community Regional Hospital in Fresno in critical condition because he needed a “higher level of care.” He is expected to make a full recovery.
It is unclear what the student fell from, according to Cal Poly Environmental Health and Safety Manager David Ragsdale, though the water tower has been ruled out.
Cal Poly risk management will continue to investigate the area for any possible safety concerns. UPD will also add extra patrols through the area to discourage students from similar activity.
No police investigation is planned.
