Concerts, ballet and beer.
This is just some of what spring quarter will encompass in a variety of events ranging from concerts at SLO Brewing Co. (SLO Brew) to the California Festival of Beers. Here are some events going on in San Luis Obispo and at Cal Poly this spring.
Art After Dark is an event held the first Friday of every month in downtown San Luis Obispo in which people can gather to view various art exhibits.
“It’s a chance for art lovers to experience art once a month for free (at) different kinds of venues,” ARTS Obispo program director Jenna Hartzell said.
Downtown venues host various works of art from local artists. The creativity begins at 6 p.m. and continues until 9 p.m.
“There’s just this buzz of energy, it’s a really wonderful feeling,” Hartzell said. “You just walk around from venue to venue (and) you get to see art and friends and meet new people.”
Swordplay and ballet are making their way to Harman Hall in the Christopher Cohan Performing Arts Center (PAC) on April 6 and 7 for artistic director Theresa Slobodnik’s “Robin Hood.”
Tickets range from $38 to $50 for adults, $32 to $44 for seniors, faculty and staff and $20 for students and children. The April 6 performance is at 7 p.m. and the April 7 performance will take place at 2 p.m.
Blue Man Group will bring music, theater and comedy to the PAC on April 8 and 9. The group is “a multinational media and entertainment company,” according to its website.
The show begins at 7:30 on both days. Tickets can be purchased via the PAC’s website.
Aaron Carter — VIP Meet and Greet
SLO Brew is throwing it back with this next event. Those looking to relive the late ’90s and early millennium will be able to do just that with the Aaron Carter VIP Meet and Greet on April 15.
Recreation, parks and tourism administration junior Rebecca Roberts has been an Aaron Carter fan since elementary school and is attending the show.
“I never saw him when I was younger,” Roberts said. “I think he’s still got it. Apparently he’s coming out with a new album but I’m hoping to (hear) his old stuff (at SLO Brew).”
The event begins at 7:30 and is open to all ages.
Some blues, R&B and a little soul. That’s the type of sound The California Honeydrops will bring to SLO Brew on May 10.
Originally formed in Oakland, Calif., this band has performed in front of audiences across Europe and the United States.
The concert is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. and is a 21 and older event. Tickets are $14 in advance and $16 at the door.
After a day of festivities at Cal Poly’s Open House, attendees will be able to enjoy live music in the form of the University Jazz Band I, Symphony and Wind Ensemble in the PAC on April 19 at 8 p.m.
“We had a performance this past weekend (March 8) so we’re going to bring some of this music back for the Open House concert,” director of bands Andy McMahan said.
Indie rock band Maps & Atlases will perform at SLO Brew on April 30. The quartet is from Chicago and consists of Dave Davison, Shiraz Dada, Chris Hainey and Erin Elders.
The show is set for 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door.
Circa: 61 Circus Acts in 60 Minutes
Lights, sound and acrobats will join together onstage for Circa: 61 Circus Acts in 60 Minutes, coming to the PAC on April 23.
The show begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are available for purchase through the PAC’s website, with student tickets 50 percent off.
“Pirates of Penzance” is making its way to the PAC on May 11 for a swashbuckling adventure. Presented by Cal Poly Arts, the show will begin at 8 p.m. Tickets are on sale now.
Beer, music and sunglasses. That is the California Festival of Beers.
Those in attendance will be able to participate in beer tasting from various breweries. Breweries and entertainment are still being selected.
This year, the festival will be held in the Madonna Inn Meadows.
The festival is a benefit event and the Hospice of San Luis Obispo County will receive the proceeds. The festival is set for May 24 through May 25. Tickets can be purchased via the festival’s website.
