At the beginning of the season, they were the new kids on the block.
And they became the hunted.
First year in the Big Sky Conference. A share of the conference title. A perfect 5-0 season at Alex G. Spanos Stadium. A 7-1 record in conference. 9-2 overall in the regular season.
Head coach Tim Walsh and the Cal Poly football team are certainly making a name for themselves.
With its 42-34 win over Northern Arizona, the team broke the record for rushing yards in a season as well as rushing yards for the Big Sky. In their last game of the regular season, the Mustangs accumulated 323 yards on the ground with 180 passing yards and 503 total yards.
Quarterback Andre Broadous finished the game 6 for 9 with 180 yards and two touchdowns. Senior running back Deonte Williams rushed for more than 100 yards for the ninth time this season, setting a Cal Poly record.
During the regular season, Williams gained 1,458 yards on 218 attempts, averaging 132.5 yards a game. He finished first in the Big Sky for total rushing. Broadous scored 18 touchdowns with 1,262 yards gained and led the Big Sky in passing efficiency.
Kicker Bobby Zalud also led the Big Sky in PAT (point after touchdown) kicking percentage with a perfect rate of 100 percent.
The team, as a whole, ended the season with 57 touchdowns and 424 total points in the regular season and lead the Big Sky in scoring offense. The team also finished first in total offense in the conference with 3,666 rushing yards and 1,339 passing yards.
