The streak continues.
Rolling off of a four-match win streak, the Cal Poly women’s soccer team won one match and tied another this weekend during its two-match homestand. On the men’s side, the Mustangs tied their only matchup.
The victory on the women’s side came after the Mustangs defeated Hawaii (6-8-2, 1-4-0 Big West) 5-2 on Sunday afternoon at Alex G. Spanos Stadium. It marked the sixth straight match in which the Mustangs have either defeated or tied their opponent.
In the 13th minute of play against Hawaii, Bianca Burright fired a shot from 10 yards out into the right corner of the net following a pass by Cici Kobinski.
Hawaii responded with a goal from Krystal Pascua, tying the match at 1-1. Hawaii missed an opportunity to get ahead when a goal in the 28th minute was called back because of an offside violation.
But after the first half of play, the Mustangs let loose.
The Mustangs went on to score four goals in the second half, two of which came from Elise Krieghoff. Krieghoff continues to lead the team in goals, after scoring her ninth and 10th of the season. A total of six saves were made by Cal Poly goalkeeper Alyssa Giannetti.
After Sunday’s victory over Hawaii, the women’s soccer team looks on to traveling to play UC Riverside on Oct. 19 and Cal State Fullerton on Oct. 21.
On Friday night, the Mustangs drew a 2-2 tie with Cal State Northridge (5-4-5, 2-1-1). Sophomore Sara Lancaster put Cal Poly in the lead in the first 69 seconds of the match by scoring on an assist by Sara Epps. Four minutes later, Kobinski cut in from the left post of the Matadors’ goal and scored the second goal of the game for Cal Poly.
It turned out to be its last, and it wasn’t enough for the win.
Cal State Northridge retaliated in the 55th minute when freshman midfielder Hayley Greep shot senior forward Marissa Miller’s attempt into the Cal Poly goal. Cal State Northridge, after attempting 16 shots during the second half, scored in the 90th minute as Matadors forward Stephanie Galarze shot a goal past Giannetti from about eight yards out.
Cal Sate Northridge was able to force Giannetti to make 10 saves. They outshot the Mustangs 28-16.
Men’s soccer
The Cal Poly men’s soccer team (7-5-1, 2-2-1) tied the Sacramento State Hornets 1-1 on Friday. Despite outshooting Sacramento State (7-4-2, 4-0-1) 19-6 and limiting the Hornets to four attempts on goal in 110 minutes, Cal Poly could not pull ahead.
Cal Poly held Sacramento State to zero shot attempts for the first 49 minutes of play.
In the 50th minute, a Cal Poly defender tripped Sacramento State midfielder Gabe Silveira after he drove the ball through the Cal Poly penalty area. Hornets forward Max Alvarez utilized the penalty shot, burying it in the Cal Poly net past Mustangs freshman goalkeeper Wade Hamilton.
The Mustangs responded 17 minutes later when junior forward Mackenzie Pridham took a short cross from forward Benny Estes and placed a shot into the back of the Hornets’ net. With his goal on Friday, Pridham became the first Cal Poly player since David Zamora in 2008 to score eight goals in a single season.
Cal Poly moved up to a third place tie in the Big West with No. 8 UC Santa Barbara, while Sacramento State remains in the lead with 13 points.
On Tuesday, the Mustangs return to Alex G. Spanos Stadium and will host second place UC Davis (5-4-4, 3-1-0).
