Women’s basketball, UCSB 55, Cal Poly 45
Despite a 12-point halftime lead in which Cal Poly held UC Santa Barbara to just 19 percent shooting from the field, the Mustangs (9-7, 2-3 Big West Conference) fell to the conference-leading Gauchos on Saturday afternoon.
UC Santa Barbara (10-6, 5-0) outscored Cal Poly by 22 points in the second half to earn the victory.
Gauchos senior guard Sha’Rae Gibbons converted a layup with 11 minutes remaining to give UC Santa Barbara its first lead of the contest.
UC Santa Barbara senior forward Jenna Green led all scorers with 16 points while senior forward Megan Harrison led the Mustangs with 12 points and seven rebounds.
Cal Poly returns to action Thursday at 7 p.m. when they host Pacific in Mott Gym.
Men’s tennis: Cal Poly 6, Concordia 1
The long awaited debut of freshman Andre Dome’s dual career at No. 1 singles did not disappoint as the Arroyo Grande native scored a comeback 3-set win over sophomore Andrey Potapkin 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 on Saturday.
Fellow freshman Sebastian Bell made his Cal Poly debut dropping a 6-4, 7-6 decision to Augusto Elias. The loss was Cal Poly’s only of the day against Concordia.
The Mustangs top duo of junior Robert Foy and senior Darryn Young won an 8-6 victory over Potapkin and Oliver Fabre.
The Mustangs are on the road for their next six duals beginning Saturday at 1 p.m. when they face No. 14 Pepperdine.
Women’s tennis
Cal Poly won five of six matches against Nevada on Sunday, concluding the Cal Winter Invitational in Berkeley.
Junior Suzie Matzenauer earned her first victory of the Invitational with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Caroline De Vrye. Senior’s Maria Malec and Shannon Brady and junior Whitney Peterson also won for Cal Poly.
The Mustangs dropped seven of eight singles matches against host-school and No. 2 Cal on Friday.
On Sunday the Mustangs also dropped four doubles matches to the Golden Bears, highlighted by a competitive battle between the top Cal Poly pairing of Brittany Blalock and Stephi Wong dropping an 8-5 decision to No. 7 Marina Cossou and Clair Ilcinkas.
“I thought we played our best doubles of the tournament against Cal to conclude play,” Cal Poly head coach Hugh Bream said in a statement. “We were definitely more aggressive and executed better and we are really starting to improve.”
The Mustangs have their first dual of the season at 11 a.m. on Friday when they take on Santa Clara.
Swimming
Freshman Lacey Buck broke the school record in the 1,650 Free, finishing in 16:50.60 seconds on the final day of the Southern California Grand Prix of Swimming in Long Beach.
Buck, who also holds the school record in the 1,000 Free, broke the previous school record by over 10 seconds in finishing fifth.
Sophomore Peter Kline finished fourth in the 200 IM with a preliminary time of 1:51.37 and also qualified for the 100 Back final with a time of 50.43.
Head Coach Tom Milich decided the team would not compete in the final swims so that the athletes would be able to attend Tuesday classes.
