With a Ryan Anderson 28th-minute goal, the Cal Poly men’s soccer team earned its first NCAA Tournament victory, 1-0 over UCLA on Friday night at Drake Stadium in Los Angeles.
Cal Poly goalkeeper Eric Branagan-Franco recorded his 25th career shutout while making three saves, but the Bruins had several scoring opportunities that were stopped by the Cal Poly defense.
Midfielder Jose Garcia blocked a shot on the goal line in the 42nd minute and defender Josh Didion headed another potential goal in the 79th minute to keep the Bruins off the board.
Cal Poly (11-5-6) will meet 14th-seeded UC Irvine at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
The Mustangs and Anteaters played to a 1-1 tie on Oct. 22 at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
After giving up the lead on a 77th-minute goal by sophomore forward David Zamora, the Anteaters (14-1-6) were awarded a penalty kick in the final minute of the match and leveled the score.
Women’s volleyball
UC Irvine 3, Cal Poly 1
The Mustangs (16-11, 11-5 Big West Conference) were defeated 20-25, 25-16, 26-24, 28-26 on Saturday at Crawford Court in Irvine.
The win ensured the Anteaters (17-12, 12-4) a second-place finish in the Big West and pushed Cal Poly to third.
Senior opposite Kylie Atherstone, playing in her final Big West contest, tallied a match-high 20 kills with a .370 hitting percentage.
Outside hitter Kari Pestolesi led UC Irvine with 18 kills and a .366 hitting percentage.
Cal Poly concludes its regular season by traveling to No. 6 Hawaii for a two-match series starting Wednesday.
Men’s basketball
BYU 76, Cal Poly 64
The Mustangs wrapped up the Basketball Travelers Invitational with a loss to the tournament host on Saturday night in Provo, Utah.
Cal Poly (1-3) was led by senior forward Titus Shelton’s 22 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the floor.
Sophomore forward Wes Dipprey led Cal Poly with nine rebounds, while sophomore guard Shawn Lewis added 15 points.
BYU (5-0) was led by Lee Cummard’s 28 points and nine rebounds. Center Chris Miles added 24 points and six rebounds for the Cougars.
Cal Poly finished the invitational with a 1-2 record after losing to Rice in the first game and defeating North Florida in the second.
The Mustangs will return to Utah to face Utah State at 6:05 p.m. Saturday.
Women’s basketball
Cal Poly 70,
San Diego 64
The Mustangs were led by senior forward Lisa McBride’s 15 points and nine rebounds at the Jenny Craig Pavilion on Saturday afternoon.
The Mustangs (2-1) held the Toreros to just 38.2-percent shooting for the game while shooting 46 percent themselves.
Freshman Abby Bloetscher added 13 points and five rebounds off the bench for the Mustangs.
The Toreros (2-2), last year’s West Coast Conference Tournament champion, were led by center Amber Sprague’s 19 points, nine rebounds and five blocks.
Cal Poly will be back in action hosting UCLA at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Mott Gym.
