Within the year of a typical freshman, there are, what seem to be, an infinite amount of experiences that shape it. But as we sift through the countless experiences, we realize these things become a routine. We wake up and go to class during the week, fill our weekends up with shenanigans. And once in a while, we have an epic weekend. Then we quietly spend Sunday catching up or preparing for the upcoming week’s work. And repeat.
Of course, there are the little things that pop up here and there that aren’t part of our normal routine. There was fraternity rush, which resulted in the boys (men, I’m sorry) in the residence hall coming home after bid night yelling and bear-hugging to celebrate their bids, in addition to the current blue-tape art frenzy going on amongst the dorms. Might I add that the tape art I’ve seen so far — not that I’ve seen many, as I’ve only seen the Sierra Madre and Yosemite residence halls ones — look amazing. (I’m talking to you Yosemite. Sierra Madre, step your game up!)
But although they are important, today is not about all those events, it’s about fashion. Specifically for spring.
Now, this might be weird, but don’t stop reading because you think fashion is girly (guys) or because you think you are already good-looking as it is and don’t need any more help (which I’m sure is accurate).
Just because the groundhog of all groundhogs, Punxsutawney (punx-suh-taw-nee) Phil, has predicted six more weeks of winter, doesn’t mean we can’t start thinking about beautiful spring. Besides, we’re all over this dreary weather anyway, right? Not that it’s ever really dreary at any time of day in San Luis Obispo — one of the many perks of being here.
Let’s start with guys, shall we? When we come to college, we all get a little bit lazier — girls included — and that’s one of the worst things that can happen. Guys go from dressing up in jeans and a nice tee in high school to sweats and basketball shorts in college. While it’s not necessarily a bad thing to wear sweats or any other kind of loose bottoms, it’s not exactly a great thing to wear them day after day.
So let’s step it up, for your sake (men) and for the womens’ sake, because we all love a well-dressed guy. That doesn’t mean you need to wake up an hour before class and throw on dress shoes, chinos (casual slacks, similar to khakis), a clean dress shirt and a blazer. (Save that for date night).
Instead, wake up five minutes before you usually get up for class and put on some jeans or shorts and a nice top. Whether it be a casual dress shirt or a simple tee (a v-neck always looks good, just not too deep), it works. And if you want to be a little more dressed in the most casual way possible, throw on a simple cardigan or a light jacket.
Now for color. It’s spring (it basically is in San Luis Obispo, anyway) so don’t just stick with your winter colors: dark blues, browns, blacks, greens, etc. Throw some color on, even if it’s just a colored stripe on your shirt. Light and bright blues, along with tangerines (the color, not the fruit), light greens and deep reds are a huge thing for spring, so wear those colors to add some life to your outfits.
Just like with the guys, for spring, girls, add some color to your outfits. The same color scheme for guys applies to girls, but we have a bit more we can work with.
This spring is all about bold and bright florals, pastel everything, geometric prints, tops with shoulder cut-outs and cropped tops. Throw all this into your closet and you’re set for spring.
Outfit-wise, get rid of the much worn and loved leggings. Trade the “pants” in for actual bottoms: skirts, jeans and shorts. Then pair them with any of the above mentioned spring trends. When it’s a little bit colder in the mornings but hot in the afternoon, throw on a simple, yet classy blazer.
These are simple things to add to your daily outfits, so if you’re feeling a little more stylish and want some more help, find me while I’m walking to class! You’ll most likely catch me tripping over the little cracks in the ground … I wish I was kidding.
I hope to see the freshman class dress a little classier this week because, let’s be honest, we are quite a good looking class.
