UPDATE: Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center spokesperson Ron Yukelson said Chan is listed Wednesday as being in serious but stable condition. This has changed since he was admitted Tuesday in critical condition.
A Cal Poly student was found in critical condition Tuesday morning after he was thrown from his motorcycle while riding in San Luis Obispo.
Mechanical engineering junior Wyatt Chan was riding westbound on the 200 block of Tank Farm Road when he went off the road for an unknown reason. San Luis Obispo police say he hit a building and was thrown off the bike and sustained major injuries.
San Luis Obispo police lieutenant Bill Proll said the case is still under investigation.
An ambulance transported Chan to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center from the crash. A hospital spokesperson did not immediately return a call for comment Wednesday afternoon.
Officers could not find a motorcycle helmet near Chan, Proll said. He said he is not sure if that means Chan was not wearing one, or if someone moved it after the crash.
“It’s still kind of puzzling us, because we understand he was a very safe rider,” Proll said.
The crash also severed a water line in the building.
