Several hundred gallons of Cal Poly egg nog were recalled this week after routine testing discovered E. coli in the egg nog batches at the Cal Poly Creamery.
Cal Poly then elected to collect all egg nog dated with expiration codes Dec. 10 and Dec. 17 from local grocery stores, dairy science department head Bruce Golden said.
“We don’t know exactly what the contamination was or what species,” Golden said. “The prudent thing to do is just recall everything that might be affected.”
Workers at the Cal Poly Creamery personally collected the effected egg nog from Scolari’s Foods, Spencer’s Fresh Markets, SLO Fresh Market, Cal Poly Campus Store and Village Market.
Cal Poly is now working with the California Department of Food and Agriculture to ensure that the Cal Poly Creamery’s facilities are safe and sanitized, Golden said. New, contamination-free batches of egg nog should be in stores by next week, Golden said.
Because testing discovered the E. coli, the Cal Poly dairy science department has not received any reports of sickness resulting from the contaminated egg nog.
