Nine more days, nine more days, nine more days.
As I write this, only nine days stand between me and Thanksgiving break. On Tuesday, Nov. 22, most of us will pile into our cars with whoever we’ve met at Cal Poly from our hometowns (hopefully you know these people before you get into their cars), and head home to celebrate Thanksgiving break. After more than eight weeks of class, going home sounds pretty good right about now.
It’s not that I don’t love Cal Poly, but even with more than two years under my belt, college is still an adjustment. It’s cooking for myself, doing my own laundry and many other “grown-up” responsibilities that I need a break from. It’s not like these things are hard, but knowing that your mom missed you so much, and is going to wait on you hand-and-foot when you get home sounds like a nice alternative.
So, I’m counting down the days until I go home for Thanksgiving break. Even if it’s only four or five days, it’s a nice break from school, which has become pretty routine and boring by now.
The only problem is, Thanksgiving break isn’t exactly a “break.” It’s right before dead week — the week before finals week when we’re supposed to be studying for finals. But as any Cal Poly veteran knows, dead week is anything but dead. It’s like all of our teachers get together and decide that their goal is to make sure you’re dead by the end of dead week — it seems like everyday is filled with presentations, midterms and even final exams.
So Thanksgiving break becomes a giant, Turkey-filled cram session. Not exactly the way I want to spend my first trip home of the quarter, but trust me, you’ll regret blowing school off completely.
Even though Thanksgiving break is a giant tease, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Winter break is just two weeks later. Or, if you have early finals like me, it could be as little as eight days later — another countdown to look forward to.
So, even though December seems a bit far off now, it’s really only two countdowns and about 10 final projects away — better get started, because it comes sooner than you think.
So with thoughts of Thanksgiving dinner and sleeping ’til noon in your bed back at home, don’t give up on school yet. Power through, because in only nine more days you’ll be home-free (haha, get it?).
