Lauren RabainoAfter getting out to a 7-1 lead in Berkeley on Tuesday afternoon, the Cal Poly baseball team surrendered its lead to fall 10-8 to No. 7 Cal at Evans Diamond.
The Golden Bears jumpstarted their rally by scoring twice in the bottom of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Michael Capbarat and a single by Charlie Cutler.
Josh Satin blasted his 13th home run of the season in the fifth frame to cut the lead to 7-4, but the sixth was when Cal did its most damage, crossing home plate five more times on four hits to pull ahead 9-7.
The surge was aided by Satin intentionally being walked, Brett Jackson being hit by a pitch, a Dylan Tonneson sacrifice fly and a Cal Poly infield error. Cal (27-10-2) tacked on its final run in the seventh thanks to a Jackson groundout.
Cal Poly, which had won eight of 10, scored twice in the first and five times in the fourth.
Golden Bears sophomore left-hander Chris Petrini (3-2) entered in the fifth and retired 10 of 12 batters while earning the victory.
Third baseman Brent Morel was 2 for 5 with four RBI for Cal Poly, which was outhit 14-6.
Sophomore right-hander Mark DeVincenzi (1-1) allowed three runs and two hits in two-thirds of an inning and suffered the loss.
The Mustangs (17-20) will begin an eight-game homestand while resuming Big West Conference play by opening a three-game series against UC Santa Barbara at Baggett Stadium at 6 p.m. Friday.
