Lauren RabainoDespite a complete-game five-hitter by freshman left-hander Anna Cahn, the Cal Poly softball team fell 3-0 at No. 16 Long Beach State on Sunday.
The loss at the 49er Softball Complex came on the heels of the Mustangs’ 3-1 series-opening defeat and a 4-3 win in Saturday’s doubleheader, meaning they’ve still not won a season series at Long Beach State since transitioning to Division I in 1995.
While the 49ers posted two runs in the first inning, Cal Poly (16-18, 4-5 Big West Conference), playing its ninth nationally ranked opponent this year, mustered a mere two hits against the nation’s ERA leader, Brooke Turner (20-4).
The 49ers (31-11, 7-2) got their pair of first-frame scores on a two-RBI single up the middle by right fielder Danielle Linke.
Following the first inning, Cahn (5-10) retired seven of eight before Long Beach State tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth, when left fielder Lacy Tyler plated Linke.
Cal Poly, which has won a program-best 11 consecutive contests at home, will open a three-game series by hosting Cal State Northridge in a doubleheader beginning at noon Saturday at Bob Janssen Field.
