DJ Tiësto is coming to Avila on Wednesday as part of his 2011 Club Life College Invasion tour — a tour focused on college campuses and catered to “what students want.”
Collective Effort Events and Otter Productions are working with Tiësto to bring his tour to Avila Beach Golf Resort, which has a 3,000 person capacity — approximately the number of people who should be attending the event, according to co-owner of Collective Effort Events Taylor Stevens.
With the smaller-scale venue, the show is going to be more intimate, Stevens said. Tiësto is known for his use of lights, lasers and LED screens in his performance, which takes his show to a different level.
“It’s going be a great show,” Stevens said. “It’s definitely targeted to the students, so it’s going to be catered to Cal Poly, Cuesta and UCSB. It’s kind of going to be a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see him in a small town. It’s something people probably don’t want to miss, even if they’re not fans of Tiësto yet.”
There are four semitrucks full of audio and visual equipment sure to make the Avila Beach show a huge production, Stevens said.
A DJ from the Netherlands, Tiësto has made a name for himself across the world. Starting in 1994, his music has covered an array of trance and house, but his music has transformed over the years. He has challenged himself to focus on his light productions. He was also awarded the title of “Greatest DJ of All Time” by a Mixmag poll.
Tiësto released his album Club Life Volume 1 on April 5 through his own music label, Musical Freedom. The 15 tracks include guest appearances from artists such as Diplo, Moguai and Kaskade.
His Kaleidoscope tour, in which he travelled around the world for 15 months and had 175 tour dates, got him nominated for two 2010 Billboard Touring Awards.
“I’m definitely looking forward to the music because I’m a die-hard fan, and I have all of his songs and listen to them all the time,” said materials engineering junior Jimmy Shedden. “I saw him at Electric Daisy Carnival, but he had a shorter set, and this time he should have a longer set and it should be more personal.”
Industrial technology junior Nick Rodger said he’s looking forward to better-known artists coming through San Luis Obispo.
“It’s not very often that a popular artist such as Tiësto comes to our area,” he said. “They are slowly getting more concerts in San Luis Obispo. So when an opportunity like this comes by, you should swoop on it. Tickets were a little pricey but not too bad, about $50. But the earlier you purchased them, the cheaper.”
Nineteen-year-old DJ Porter Robinson from North Carolina, whose mixes have an electro house focus, will open for Tiësto. Billboard.com rated him number 18 on its list of “21 under 21–Music’s Hottest Minors.”
The 2011 Club Life College Invasion tour has stopped in various parts of the United States such as Florida, New York, North Carolina and Texas. The concert in Avila Beach will be one of the last shows of the three week tour.
Tickets can be bought online or at Boo Boo Records. The doors open at 5 p.m.
