While never having written a blog before (and I mean never), I’m going to do my very best here to be interesting to any and all of you who read this. I, along with the other editors, do thank you for taking time out of your incredibly busy schedule to read our paper and check out all of the hard work we put in every night.
So, allow me to introduce myself. I’m Nicole Marcell, the assistant news editor here at the Mustang Daily. I’m the one in charge of wire stories, or the national news that gets printed in our little college paper. I also do Word on the Street — so watch out for me and don’t be afraid to say “Hi!”
I’m new to the newsroom, never having worked in one before, so jumping right in really reinforces that whole “Learn By Doing” thing that gets shoved down all of our throats here at Cal Poly. But the best part of jumping right in like that is how welcoming everyone on staff has been.
After applying for an editorial job at the Daily (Kaytlyn Leslie, our editor-in-chief, touched on the differences between the “editorial” and “ads” sides of the newsroom in her blog earlier this week), I was thrilled to be invited to join this crazy family.
And we truly are a family in the newsroom. Spending long hours together five days a week certainly fosters a sense of unity. You really do start to bond with those people who you’re constantly around.
The best part of the long nights in the newsroom is when everyone starts to get a little tired and, therefore, slightly delusional. Anyone who’s ever been inside the newsroom (and we do encourage you to come in) has probably seen the little pieces of paper taped to the wall. We tend to have some moments in our nights where someone will say something absolutely ridiculous that makes everyone laugh.
And so what do we do? We immortalized their words on little slips of paper for everyone to see. It’s a great way to recall fun times in the newsroom and a great way to make everyone laugh.
Well, I think I’ve rambled on long enough. Thanks for reading, and remember that all of our section editors have blogs that publish different days of the week so be sure to check those out!
