Congratulations on Tuesday’s editorial against the Rec Center expansion. I was sorely disappointed to read the official ASI voter pamphlet. The con statement missed out on many key points that your editorial picked up on. Why build a leisure pool at the Rec Center when thousands of students will have access to the one being built in Poly Canyon Village? What about the local gyms that will lose most of their student business when all Cal Poly students are forced to pay $107 per quarter for the Rec Center already? I’m relieved that the logical arguments against the Rec Center expansion have finally been voiced.
Souza needs to re-take his basic argumentation class if he thinks the voter pamphlet was “neutral.” Even the campaign slogan “Think Bigger” encourages a yes vote. Clearly ASI and the administration are pushing for this to pass. With the additional $46 million the fee will bring in (according to your editorial), it’s hard to wonder why. Furthermore, have other options for reducing the strain on the Rec Center been considered?
If Cal Poly is interested in supporting the local community, students who don’t want to wait at the Rec Center should be encouraged to use local gyms.
The Rec Center hours could also be extended past midnight so that those who want to workout at 1 a.m. don’t make the lines longer for morning and afternoon users.
This referendum clearly deserves a “No” vote.
