There was no red carpet, no glitz and glamor and no boisterous party at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, but this year’s Golden Globes Awards Show did, nonetheless, accomplish its yearly goal: give movie lovers a preview of the Oscars.
Sadly, if the strike in Hollywood continues, the real preview wasn’t who won, but rather the depressing presentation of the show itself and what the Academy Awards in February may look like.
But not everything about the 2008 Golden Globes was discouraging; after all, with 34 awards doled out, someone has to be happy.
For the film awards, director Joe Wright is likely to be one of the happiest after coming away with an award for Best Drama for his film ‘Atonement.’
Tim Burton’s “Sweeney Todd,” with no surprise, took his first Golden Globe for Best Musical/Comedy.
And after 7 past nominations, Depp finally won his own Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical/Comedy for his dark, brilliant performance in “Sweeney Todd.”
On the smaller screen, AMC’s “Mad Men” blew right by past Best Series winners “House” and “Grey’s Anatomy” and took the award home, along with a Best Actor award for the show’s lead man, John Hamm.
