
Poly soccer wins fourth straight
The Cal Poly women’s soccer team continued its winning streak in the Big West Conference with a 1-0 win over rival UC Santa Barbara Saturday night.
Erica Zumbahlen scored the Mustangs only goal late in the first half on a shot that bounced off of the crossbar and into the goal.
It was her first goal of the season.
The Gauchos outshot the Mustangs 11-9 and Cal Poly outfouled UC Santa Barbara 14-2.
Cal Poly, Long Beach State and UC Irvine have all posted three conference wins so far this season.
The game was the fourth win in a row.
The Mustangs will host UC Davis on Oct. 26 at 7 p.m.
Blalock and Wong fall in quarterfinals
The No. 2 seeded doubles team of Brittany Blalock and Steffi Wong fell 8-6 to Stanford’s Hilary Barte and Jessica Nguyen in the quarterfinals of the Stanford Fall Women’s ITA Individual Tournament in Palo Alto.
Blalock and Wong had advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Anita Athavale and Herzyl Legaspi of UC Davis in the round of 32, and Sacramento State’s Joyce Martinez and Melissa Valenzuela in the round of 16.
The duo still boasts a 12-3 overall record this season.
Cal Poly’s women’s tennis team will host the Cal Poly invitational Nov. 16-18.
The tournament will be the last of the year for the Mustangs before begining their spring 2008 schedule on Jan. 13.
Men’s tennis finishes 4-12 at Pepperdine
The men’s tennis team finished the Div. I ITA Regionals competition in Malibu with an overall record of 4-12.
Blake Wardman lost in the quarterfinals to the No. 9 seed, Matt Brooklyn of Arizona State University, in the quarterfinals, 6-2 and 10-5.
Darryn Young was the standout for the Mustangs, defeating Troy Aiken of Pepperdine University and Tim Schulzva Endert of San Diego State University before losing to Kaes Van’t Hof of USC in the round of 32.
Cal Poly returns to play Oct. 26 through Oct. 28 in the Santa Clara Invitational hosted by USC.
