Dorm life, campus food, “the freshman 15,” making friends and school work should be the things that freshmen students at Cal Poly should have to worry about. This was not the case when I walked into my basic writing class in the Engineering West building on the second day of school. There are no words to describe the wretched learning environment upon which my classmates and I were forced. The sound of hammers, saws, and everything else construction people do was playing along as our teacher desperately tried to teach the class. At least the distractions of the workers kept our minds off of the 100-degree crammed classroom we sat in. The comfort of looking outside would also be a nice diversion but the classroom is surrounded by dusty chalkboards. It is a relief knowing there are no bathrooms in the building because we have an excuse to escape from this nightmare. What a wonderful first impression of Cal Poly. It makes me wonder why students pay money to go through this misery.
