3 Mustangs rank high in positions poll
Cal Poly junior offensive players Stephen Field, Ramses Barden and James Noble have been ranked in the top ten in their respective positions in a Sports Network’s Football Championship Subdivision Poll released on June 17.
Field was ranked the highest of the three at No. 2 for center behind Portland State’s Brennan Carvalho.
Barden received a No. 5 ranking for his role at wide receiver.
Barden led the Mustangs in receiving with 824 yards on 42 catches in 2006.
Cal Poly running back Noble wrapped up Cal Poly in the poll with a No. 7 ranking.
Noble has had two consecutive seasons with more than 1,000 yards rushing with 1,578 in 2005 and 1,009 last season. He has scored 23 touchdowns in his two-year career at Cal Poly.
Futures Game
Former Cal Poly baseball standout Jimmy Van Ostrand hit a leadoff home run in the seventh inning of the XM All-Stars Futures Game Sunday at AT&T Park in San Francisco, helping to lead the World Team to a 7-2 rout of Team USA.
Van Ostrand, a British Columbia native, played in left field as a replacement and made one catch.
Currently, he is playing single-A ball in the South Atlantic League for the Lexington Legends (Virginia), an affiliate of the Houston Astros organization.
Olson in rotation for O’s
Former Cal Poly pitcher Garrett Olson made his Major League debut on July 4, filling in for the Orioles’ Steve Traschel.
In his introductory performance for the Orioles against the White Sox, Olson pitched for 4 1/3 innings, recorded four strikeouts, walked five batters, allowed five hits and two runs.
He picked up a no-decision in the game.
Then, on July 8, Baltimore’s interim manager Dave Trembley announced that Olson would be a part of the Orioles’ post-All-Star break starting rotation.
He is scheduled to start against the White Sox again Sunday.
Prior to being called up, Olson was pitching for the Orioles’ triple-A team, the Norfolk Tides, in the International League.
While pitching for the Tides, Olson led the league with 104 innings pitched.
He also recorded 94 strikeouts and ERA of 3.46 this season with the Tides.
With his debut, Olson became the 10th Cal Poly baseball player to play at the professional level.
