Cal Poly women’s volleyball has a busy schedule in which they will face eight teams that made it to the NCAA tournament last year. This makes almost any match an exciting one. However, even the players agree that the Oct. 23 match versus UC Irvine will be one to watch.
Cal Poly went 9-20 overall and 5-11 in the Big West conference. Despite the numbers, last season was deemed successful by a few of the players who said it was due to having such a young squad.
With five starters returning, the Mustangs hope to come out with a much better record and a win against UC Irvine on their home court. Cal Poly lost to the nationally ranked Anteaters in both meetings last year. In the first match the Mustangs lost all three games; however, the second match was closer, as the Mustangs won two of the five games.
This year, the Mustangs are expected to hold their own with the Anteaters, and seeing as they have already upset teams like Arizona – causing them to receive votes in the AVCA poll, ranking them at 29th – they have a fighting chance at winning come October.
Game time is 7:00 p.m. in Mott Gym.
