So much for the calm before the storm.
The Cal Poly softball team had what it hopes can still be an NCAA Tournament run thrown into serious jeopardy Thursday afternoon when it was run-ruled in a 9-0 loss in five innings to host BYU in front of 425 at Gail Miller Field in Provo, Utah.
Appearing in their first tournament game after winning their first outright Big West Conference title last Saturday, the Mustangs (39-16) did not look ready for prime time.
Cal Poly gave up six runs in the first inning, was outhit 14-4 for the game and now has its backs against the wall.
The lone player for the Mustangs to come up with multiple hits was sophomore shortstop Melissa Pura, who was 2 for 2.
The Mustangs play Southern Utah (29-30) in an elimination game at 1:30 p.m. today. The winner plays at 4 p.m. Cal Poly must win four straight to win the regional.
