Two Cal Poly football players finally learned their immediate futures at the professional level Sunday.
Cornerback Courtney Brown was chosen in the seventh round of the NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys. Linebacker Kyle Shotwell then signed a three-year undrafted free-agent contract with the Oakland Raiders.
The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Brown was tabbed by Dallas with the second pick of the seventh round, 212th overall.
The 6-1, 235-pound Shotwell signed a three-year deal, his agent, Ryan Tollner, confirmed in a phone interview Sunday.
Many mock drafts on the Internet had projected Brown between the fourth and sixth rounds, largely because of Brown’s stellar Pro Day performances.
Brown ran a 4.32-second 40-yard dash at San Jose State’s Pro Day on March 6. He did not run at Cal Poly’s Pro Day on March 26, but went through position drills March 29 at Hawaii’s Pro Day at the Home Depot Center in Carson.
Current corners on Dallas’ depth chart (prior to the draft) are Terence Newman, Aaron Glenn, Anthony Henry, Nathan Jones, Jacques Reeves and Quincy Butler, according to the team’s Web site.
Shotwell said Sunday that he hopes to compete for a spot as a weakside linebacker with Oakland. The Raiders’ current starter in that spot is Thomas Howard.
