For the first time since the creation of the Big West Championship Tournament, the women’s soccer team will be on the outside looking i. Needing a win to continue their season, the Mustangs dropped the final game of the regular season, 1-0 at UC Santa Barbara.
It took until the 85:05 mark for the Gauchos (9-10-0, 3-4) to break the 0-0 deadlock as freshman Genelle Ives received a corner kick from Allie Kueny to put UC Santa Barbara up 1-0. It was Ives team-leading seventh goal of the season, and the final dagger in the Mustangs (10-5-4, 2-4-1) hopes to defend its Big West title.
Leading Cal Poly was junior scoring leaders Sharon Day and Kelsey Carroll with three shots apiece. Senior Becky Clark led the team with two shots on goal for the evening.
UC Santa Barbara was led in shots by freshman Sami Svrcek with three.
The Mustangs outshot the Gauchos 11-5, with six of the Mustangs shots coming on goal.
Senior goalkeeper Jamie Considine was clutch the entire contest, coming up with six saves and collecting her third shutout of the season. Senior Liz Hill ended the night with two saves.
UC Santa Barbara held the advantage in fouls 13-10, and in corner kicks 4-2.
The 2-4-1 conference record marks the first time since joining the Big West that the Mustangs will finish with a record below .500 in conference.
