A recent letter estimated the number of civilian deaths in Iraq, but I believe it was severely understated. An article in the New York Times quoted a study done by American and Iraqi public health researchers, the estimate was slightly higher: between 426,369 and 793,663 for March 2003 to July 2006. Casualty counts from hospitals, morgues, and governments are alternately described as unrepresentative, and uncooperative, making estimates difficult and debated. The above, and other estimates, can be found in the October 2006 article, “Iraqi Dead May Total 600,000, Study Says,” online at Nytimes.com
