A day after being held to 47 points and a 29.3 shooting percentage against Illinois, junior forward Kristina Santiago and junior guard Rachel Clancy were not ready to be held to another offensive blemish.
In the second day of the Courtyard by Marriott San Luis Obispo Holiday Beach Classic, Santiago posted a contest-best 28 points and Clancy added a new collegiate single-game highs for points (23) and rebounds (15) to fuel a 89-80 win against Cal State Bakersfield inside Mott Gym, Sunday.
Senior forward Becky Tratter drained all six of her shot attempts from the field to finish to add 13 points for Cal Poly (3-2), who shot a season-best 58.6 percent from the floor.
Clancy, Cal Poly’s representative on the five-player all-tournament team, converted nine of her 11 field goal attempts and three of four attempts from beyond the three-point arc. Santiago was 11-for-17 from the floor and finished one point shy of her career scoring high, set at Cal State Bakersfield last season.
A jumper from Clancy capped a 7-0 Mustang run to provide Cal Poly a 16-9 advantage after just four minutes of action. Consecutive layups from Cal State Bakersfield forward Tamiko Davis allowed the Roadrunners (2-4) to deadlock the scoreline in less than two minutes. Neither team led by more than three points the remainder of the half and the sides were tied at intermission, 37-37.
Highlighted, however, by a pair of Clancy jumpers, Cal Poly opened the second half with a 10-0 run and, in leading by as much as 70-57 with six-and-a-half minutes remaining, failed to trail the remainder of the game.
Cal Poly completes its season-long five-game homestand with a 2 p.m. matchup against San Diego on Saturday, Dec. 5.
