Cal Poly transfer students represent roughly 20 percent of the newly admitted Fall 2018 class. To celebrate these students during National Transfer Student Week, Cal Poly is hosting on-campus activities daily Oct. 15-19.

“The events are for all transfer students, no matter what major and year,” Mustang Success Center Adviser Lindsay Lacey said. “If you are a transfer student, don’t be afraid to reach out to somebody. We see you, we hear you and we want you to feel like you matter, because you do.”

There are 911 new undergraduate transfer students attending this quarter and 4,405 first-time freshmen, according to Cal Poly Institutional Research.

“We want to increase the community for transfer students and increase visibility,” Lacey said.

The week’s events kicked off Monday at 5 p.m. at Mustang Lanes, where students bowled, mingled and ate free pizza. The festivities will continue Tuesday as students are invited to talk with advisers over donuts.

There will be a Transfer Professional Panel in the Advanced Technologies Laboratory (building 7) Wednesday at 5 p.m., where students can hear advice about careers and success at Cal Poly from professionals.

Another panel discussion will be held in Chumash Auditorium at 11:10 a.m. Thursday, titled “Transfers Helping Transfers,” where students and faculty can share experiences and advice.

A Mix and Mingle event will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in the Julian A. McPhee University Union (building 65) for transfer students to socialize, eat and play games with their peers to foster a sense of community.

The events were organized by Cal Poly Advising and the Association of Transfer Students (ATS), which plans events throughout the year to create a community for transfer students.

“We’re hoping this week transfer students feel like they really belong here,” ATS President and business administration senior Alisa Frost said. “It’s a great opportunity to make them feel welcomed, loved and appreciated.”
