A semitruck got stuck traveling under a railroad bridge on Highland Drive.
It happened at about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday; traffic slowed but transit schedules were not delayed, track inspector Rick Carrasco said. He said it seemed to be negligence on the driver’s part, but there was no structural damage to the bridge.
The truck was transporting carrots that Cal Poly mechanical engineering junior Stefan Owechko helped move to another rig. Owechko blames the accident on a lack of signs warning semitruck drivers.
“This is a horrible intersection, it’s a big traffic clogger,” he said. “It was lucky this happened during summer and not the school year.”
Although signs indicate there is just under 13 feet of clearance, these types of accidents have occurred at least six times in the past 12 years that Jim Montague, Cal Poly Facility Services lead carpenter, has worked for the university. So many times he has lost count, Montague said.
“It seems like they need to (verbally) let the truckers know they can’t exit campus this way,” he added.
The truck was damaged but no one was injured.
