Voodoo to put a spell on Poly

The Voodoo Glow Skull, a punk band sprinkled with Latino flavor, will open for Flogging Molly and Go Buddy Go on Saturday at the Recreation Center. The band just finished a tour of the West Coast to promote its latest album “Adiccioon, Tradicioon, y Revolucioon.”

“Addiccion” is their seventh release to date and strives to combine punk and ska with the Mexican music of their “roots.” The band has created its own label, recording studio and record store to promote their albums. “Addiccion” was produced and recorded in the bands own studio called Dog Run Studio.

Voodoo caught up with Flogging Molly during a tour in Europe. After collaborating in Italy, they decided to join in during Flogging Molly’s latest tour. The band believes it writes songs that are true to their Mexican heritage. In attempt to spread its message, The Voodoo Glow Skulls write and perform many of their songs in Spanish.

“Being bilingual is our biggest connection to our fans, whether they are Anglo or Latino,” said Frank Casillas, the band’s vocalist. “Because we don’t have a language barrier, we’re representing people who have a lot in common with us, including our roots.”

Casillas, guitarist Eddie Casillas, bassist Jorge Casilla, drummer Jerry O’Neill, trumpeters Brodie Johnson and Gabriel Dunn and saxophonist James Hernandez, comprise the 16-year-old band.

After nearly two decades of performing, the band has created their own sound, which it describes as “California street music.” Casillas said the band liked the term so much, they may be using the same name for its next album.

“We love music. If we had to label our music, that’s what it would be,” Casillas said. “It’s our own diverse style of music because we’re like a street gang with instruments.”

Their West Coast tour will be followed by a trip to Brazil for The Punk Rock Show festival on Halloween and then off to tour England in November.

The Voodoo Glow Skulls will open with Go Betty Go on Saturday at 8 p.m. in the Rec Center. Tickets cost $20. Doors open at 7 p.m.
