This a live blog of the Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) presidential debate. Candidates speaking today are civil engineering senior Lance Collins, agricultural business junior Owen Schwaegerle and environmental management and protection junior Kyle Jordan.

The closing statement period commences.
Collins thanks everyone for coming out to listen to the debate. He ends with his campaign slogan “Connect with Collins.”
Schwaegerle urges the crowd to consider who they really want to have as president. He wants every student to vote, regardless of who they vote for.
Jordan said he is not the best candidate for the position and encouraged students to vote for Collins.

Schwaegerle discusses his previous ASI experience as a quality his competitors do not have. He believes his leadership experience with sitting on the student success fee committee and attending conferences with the current ASI president all make him a qualified candidate.

“What is your political affiliation and why?”
No candidates discussed their political affiliation.

Regarding the open leadership policies within clubs, Jordan states, “Do we want our student fees to go toward exclusionary policies?”

“What is your stand on mandatory SOAR and WOW?”
Collins: Fully supports it. He states statistics have shown that these freshmen oriented programs have increased student success. It also helps keep new students well-informed.
Jordan: He says administration should be accountable for informing students of the mandating of these programs.
Schwaegerle: He is not for mandatory requirements and prefers freedom of choice.

“How do you feel about diversity in campus?”
Schwaegerle: Believes we need a diversity of ethnicity and ideas, he states that by having communities where people can be anchored to, will allow for diversity and give students the chance to find their niche. He wants to help students get anchored at cal poly (fraternities, sororities, clubs).

Collins discusses a solution with SLO transit and also addresses the education. Says biggest concern is student success. He proclaims he will do anything he can to make students successful.

Schwaegerle addresses student concerns with safety and he wants the students to feel comfortable on campus. He hopes to address sexual assault. He also hopes to enhance the school spirit with games and poly students coming out to show spirit

“What are three issues you want to address?”
Jordan answered regarding issues with mandatory second year housing. He explains how admin wants to incorporate second year housing to ensure housing. “We need to make sure the student voices are heard today.”
He addresses the concerns regarding transportation concerns particularly with the parking spots taken away,

Lance Collins introduces himself to the students and speaks about his campaign, “Connect with Collins.” He hopes to connect the campus with the students.
Owen Schwaegerle introduces himself as a business major minoring in political science. He speaks fondly about Cal Poly and calls back on his Interhousing Council experience during his years in Fremont Residence Hall.
Kyle Jordan is a junior transfer who hopes to work with the law and believes his qualities learned through working and school will help him ensure a smooth connection between students and the university campus. He urges students to express what they hope to change.
