1. Prostate cancer occurs when the cells in the male’s prostate grow too rapidly and form a tumor.
Yikes! So, what is a prostate? The prostate is the small walnut-shaped gland that is responsible for producing a special kind of seminal fluid — it nourishes and transports semen!
2. The likelihood of a man developing prostate cancer increases if he has a mother or sister with breast cancer.
Girls, watch out for your lady parts — for both your sake and the men in your family! However, family history doesn’t just stop at women: Men with fathers or brothers that developed prostate cancer before the age of 60 are twice as likely to develop it as well.
3. A man’s risk of developing prostate cancer rises as he ages.
Typically, men between the ages of 60-80 are at higher risks of developing prostate cancer.
4. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the United States.
Skin cancer is the most common cancer affecting both sexes, but prostate is next for men. In fact, 1 in 7 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer; that’s a sobering statistic.
5. Poor diet and lack of exercise can increase the risk of prostate cancer.
It’s wise to cut back on red meats (especially processed meats), high-fat foods and dairy. Additionally, obese men are more likely to develop prostate cancer.
6. The Movember Foundation is here to help.
As the world’s largest non-government funder of prostate cancer research and services, it is clear that whatever Movember does to raise awareness will garner attention. By participating in their annual Moustache November event, you are complying with Movember’s rules to “use the power of the moustache to create conversations about men’s health and to raise funds for prostate cancer.”
Bonus Fact
Last year Woodstock’s Pizza raised over $3,000 for the Movember Foundation! Support the cause by ordering an All Meat Orgy pizza anytime in November, and a proportion of proceeds will be donated. Also, join the party at Woodstock’s Stache Bash on Wednesday, Nov. 19th starting at 9:00pm — arm wrestling contests, stache challenges and more!
