Sophomore right-hander Casey Bloomquist went six innings and allowed two runs to earn his 10th victory of the season as the Cal Poly baseball team beat UC Riverside 7-2 in Sunday’s series finale.
With the win, the Mustangs (38-9, 14-4 Big West) took the series against the Highlanders after winning Saturday’s game as well. That victory snapped Cal Poly’s four-game losing streak — the Mustangs lost the final two games of last weekend’s series against Long Beach State before losing Tuesday’s midweek game to Pepperdine and Friday’s opener to UC Riverside.
Entering Saturday’s game, the Mustangs had scored just nine runs through its previous four games, but broke out offensively for seven runs in both Saturday and Sunday’s contests.
Led by shortstop Peter Van Gansen’s two RBIs, three different players earned two hits for Cal Poly on Sunday. Senior catcher Chris Hoo also had two RBIs.
Cal Poly, playing its next four games at Baggett Stadium, takes on Pepperdine at home on Tuesday night. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
