San Luis Obispo alternative-rock band Louder Space will perform on campus on May 8 for Associated Students, Inc.’s (ASI) Concerts in the Plaza series.
“We are so excited to play on campus,” drummer Philip Tyler said.
Louder Space was created by four Cal Poly alumni: Oren Ben-Joseph (bass), Tyler (drums), Clayton Daly (guitar) and Chris Kaye (vocals). The band recently celebrated its second birthday.
The foursome met in 2011 through a mutual friend while studying at Cal Poly. After they moved in together, everything clicked.
Tyler said for the past two and a half years, they have been fueling their passion for music with everything they’ve got and “plunging themselves into the music industry.” The band aspires to take its talent to Los Angeles in an attempt to take bigger steps in its career.
“This last month has been really hard,” Ben-Joseph said. “But performing reminds us of why we push through this. There is this feeling we get, unlike anything else.”
Agricultural business freshman Sarah Shepherd watched the band perform at Wildflower.
“They are very friendly and engaging with the crowd,” Shepherd said. “The crowd loves them, and I can’t wait for them to come to campus.”
The band began recording singles and music videos until it could afford to record an entire album. For a just over a year, the band had been working toward a goal that finally paid off — they released their first album, Airwaves, this past May 2.
“This album is our dedication to San Luis Obispo,” Ben-Joseph said. “It helped foster us as students, and Cal Poly is our biggest fan base. We will always consider our roots and it is going to be so cool to come back and play where it all started.”
Louder Space is set to take the Julian A. McPhee University Union Plaza stage at 11 a.m. The performance will be complemented with a tie-dye and ice cream sundae social.
