For the second straight year, all eyes will be focused on the quarterback battle in Cal Poly football’s 2014 spring game.
Junior quarterbacks Dano Graves and Chris Brown will headline the annual showcase, which starts at noon in Alex G. Spanos Stadium on Saturday.
Graves and Brown split time at quarterback throughout the season last year, but a full-time starter was never established. A four-way battle raged on through spring drills last season, but Graves and Brown are the only two of that group that will play on Saturday. The other two were Vince Moraga, who is nursing an injury suffered last season, and Tanner Trosin, who transferred schools.
Other than the starting spot under center, other members of the team will be highlighting their talents for many positions in the approximately hour-long game. Injuries will keep several returning starters away, but several younger players are expected to vie for roles on next season’s team.
Of the notable returners, senior slotback Chris Nicholls, wide receivers sophomore Cam Akins, junior Jordan Hines and sophomore Carson McMurtrey are expected to take snaps for the offense, while senior linebacker Nick Dzubnar, senior defensive back Jordan Williams and senior defensive lineman Chris Lawrence headline the defense.
It will also be the first time fans have a chance to see transfers Burton De Koning (Nevada), freshman slotback Dominique Love (New Mexico State) and Logan Mayes (Washington State) play in a Cal Poly uniform.
The Mustangs finished 6-6 (5-3 Big Sky) last season and open up the 2014 schedule on Aug. 28 at New Mexico State.
