Flower crowns and cut-offs filled the desert over the weekend as thousands of people rocked out to great music at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, arguably the most popular — and stylish — music festival.
For music and fashion lovers alike, festival season is a beautiful time of the year, and Coachella has kicked it off in style. The next few months will be filled with festivals such as Outside Lands and Stagecoach, where effortless, cool style marries wonderful music. What more could you want?
No matter what music festival you attend this year, here’s a simple guide to looking your fest best:
1. Have fun and be comfortable
That’s the key to looking your best this festival season. It’s cliché, I know, but very true. Don’t be afraid to try something new by mixing and matching bold prints and patterns and trying different trends such as maxi dresses and crop tops. Festival fashion is all about being creative with your outfits and expressing yourself, so have fun.
Festival fashion has become increasingly popular, so much so that clothing stores and online retailers such as Nasty Gal, Asos and Forever 21 have dedicated special shops to the trend. Thanks to these (and more) trendy retailers, putting together your favorite festival outfit is never too difficult.
2. Match your mood and outfit to the music
Each music festival has its own look and feel, so choose your outfits based on the tunes of the artists you’re planning on seeing.
3. Make a statement with great sunnies
Sunglasses are a necessity, but try something other than your aviators or Ray-Bans. Have some fun and choose statement shades in different frame shapes or with floral appliques.
4. Easy, breezy dresses make for carefree days
Free-flowing maxi dresses are on trend and wonderfully comfortable. For an effortless boho-chic look, wear a maxi dress and feel free to dance around in the sun all day.
5. Rompers, jumpsuits and overalls are a must this festival season
Talk about a blast from the past. Overalls and jumpsuits are making headlines again, and there’s no better time to try the trend than at a music festival where everyone is having fun with fashion.
6. Now is your time to embrace the crop top
Like I said in my last article, crop tops aren’t leaving any time soon, and definitely not during festival season. Rock a crop top underneath a loose-fitting top or overalls — or, bare your midriff and pair a crop top with your favorite bottoms.
7. Accessorize
The way I see it, accessories are always the frosting to your outfit. Whether it’s a flower crown or a giant nose ring à la Kendall Jenner, add accessories that complement your outfit.
8. Don’t forget to keep the weather in mind
You don’t want to be freezing at night, and you definitely don’t want to be unprepared for rain. Check the weather beforehand and bring a mix of layers so you will be ready for anything.
Also, don’t forget your sunscreen. Your outfit may be important, but you don’t want your skin to be itchy and sunburnt halfway through the festival weekend.
