The No. 3 Cal Poly baseball team kept rolling on Tuesday as the Mustangs won their seventh consecutive game with a 9-1 victory at Cal State Bakersfield.
Freshman pitcher Justin Calomeni (7-1) went eight innings and allowed one earned run on seven hits without walking a batter. He faced just one batter over the minimum through the first seven innings thanks to three double plays turned by the defense behind him.
The offense exploded for four runs in the second inning before tacking on a total of five more in the 4th, 5th and 6th innings. Sophomore designated hitter Brian Mundell had four RBIs in the game.
Junior left fielder Zack Zehner hit two doubles and a single and sophomore second baseman Mark Mathias notched three singles. In all, eight players got a hit for Cal Poly.
The Mustangs (31-5) have now won 13 of their last 14 games and 21 of their last 23, while continuing to move up the national rankings. No Division I Cal Poly baseball team has ever been ranked No. 1 and its No. 3 ranking this week was the program’s highest ever. The Mustangs are currently projected to host an NCAA Regional — the first round of the NCAA Tournament — by Baseball America.
Cal Poly returns to Baggett Stadium, where the Mustangs are 20-2 this year, for a three-game series with Cal State Fullerton starting on Thursday.
