Cal Poly doesn’t simply forget about students after they graduate, they honor those who deserve it.
Every year during Homecoming, Cal Poly holds the Honored Alumni Banquet, during which awards are given to one person from each college, as well as a distinguished service award and a leadership award.
The 2013 honored alumni are:
Charles “Chuck” L. Harrington (College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences) — Harrington is the chairman and chief executive officer of Parsons Corporation, an international construction, engineering and technical management services firm stationed in Pasadena, Calif., which he joined in 1982. He also serves on the boards of Cal Poly’s President’s Cabinet, the LA Chamber of Commerce, the LA Sports Council, UCLA’s Anderson School of Management, North Carolina’s Blumenthal Performing Arts Center and several volunteer organizations.
Paul H. Hamalian (College of Architecture and Environmental Design) — Hamalian is the senior director of strategic planning for Habitat for Humanity International. He has worked with the organization not only in the U.S., but also in Costa Rica, Ecuador and Nicaragua.
Rik Floyd (Orfalea College of Business) — Floyd has worked in the restaurant, construction and real estate businesses, and is the co-founder of CP2 Project Consultants, LLC. CP2 began in 2006 and facilitates real estate ownership with owner/user partners. Floyd also serves on the College of Business Dean’s Advisory Council and is the Southern California Regional Director on the Cal Poly Alumni Association Board.
Beth F. Anderson (College of Engineering) — Anderson works for Boeing Commercial Airplanes as the vice president of supply chain rate capability for commercial airplanes supplier management. She was previously director of the Interiors Responsibility Center, which designed and assembled multiple interior systems, including those of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. She is also an acting member of Cal Poly’s President’s Cabinet.
Thomas J. Gallo (College of Liberal Arts) — Gallo is the vice president of strategic business development for G3 Enterprises, a packaging company that is part of Gallo Winery and based in Modesto, Calif. He is the grandson of Gallo Winery founder Julio Gallo and worked in various Gallo Winery departments before building Grand Street Printing Technologies, the predecessor to G3 Enterprises, in 1993.
Brian J. Hackney (College of Science and Math) — Hackney is a broadcast journalist currently working as a science reporter, meteorologist and fill-in news anchor for CBS 5 in San Francisco. He has interviewed many celebrities, including Paul McCartney and Carl Sagan, and has won 18 Emmy awards in multiple categories, including best news anchor, best breaking news coverage and best documentary. He was a disc jockey on KCPR during his time at Cal Poly.
Alfred W. Amaral Jr. (Cal Poly Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award) – Amaral, who graduated in 1964 with a degree in agricultural business, was the executive director of the Cal Poly Corporation for 29 years. He was the CAFES’ honored alumnus in 1989 as well as the recipient of the Outstanding Staff/Employee Award in 1985. He and his wife are the founders of the Al and Rose Amaral Ag Enterprise Endowment, which was established to benefit future generations of Cal Poly students.
Dr. Philip S. Bailey Jr. (Sandra Gardebring Ogren Leadership Award) – Bailey is the dean of Cal Poly’s COSAM, professor of chemistry and biochemistry and creator of the “Study 25-35 hours/week” motto. He has received many awards throughout his career, the most recent of which are the Ambassador of Goodwill award at the African Goodwill Awards in Los Angeles in April 2012, and the Faculty Excellence in Advising Award from the California State Student Association in May 2012.
