1. Fishing team

Fishing season brings a variety of tournaments to the Cal Poly Fishing Team. They travel to Wyoming, Arizona and local lakes. They even go on a cross-country road trip for the B.A.S.S. Carhartt College National Championship in Georgia.
“Out here in the Western Division we fish two separate collegiate Bass Fishing circuits,” business administration senior John Zeolla said. “The first one is the Walmart FLW College Series and the second is the B.A.S.S. Carhartt College Series. Both are incredibly well-run organizations and truly are a blessing to us collegiate anglers with the free entry fees they provide us, plus the connection with their professional bass fishing circuit.”
2. Astronomy club
The observatory is located in the courtyard of Science (building 52).
The Astronomy Club meets weekly to plan upcoming star observing camping trips, learn about the science behind the stars and discuss their passion for astronomy.
“We have had camping trips where we take our telescopes to Santa Margarita, and this last year we went to Pinnacles National Park,” computer science senior Matthew Parker said.
The club has access to the observatory on campus and a few members work part-time there as technicians.
“We also host the planetarium at the local high school,” physics junior Kaitlin McArdle said. The club holds their meetings every Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Warren J. Baker Center for Science and Mathematics (building 180), room 112.
3. SAE Racing Team
Cal Poly Racing has more than 25 members, mostly engineering majors, who make off-road racing vehicles.
“We design the car from the ground up,” engineering freshman Mitchell Aiken said.
From brakes to batteries, they design, manufacture and test everything that goes into these vehicles. The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) is a global organization. At Cal Poly, the club manages three SAE student teams: Formula, Baja and Formula Hybrid. They hold weekly meetings every Tuesday in Engineering (building 13), room 109.
4. Sailing team
The sailing team races FJ’s, which stands for Flying Juniors.
Have you ever wanted to try sailing? The Cal Poly team welcomes members of all skill levels and will teach newbies. Members also have the chance to race competitively against other schools.
The team holds weekly practices out of Morro Bay and travels up and down the coast for regattas. They mostly sail Flying Juniors — or FJ’s — which are small sailboats made for two people. The team meets every week on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. in Business (building 3), room 213.
5. SLO GLO
Music, friends and glow sticks make up SLO GLO.
If you love electronic music and things that glow in the dark, check out the SLO GLO club. They hold weekly meetings for anyone who wants to practice glowstringing and learn new tricks.
“A typical meeting involves teaching everyone as much as they can learn and just getting together and having fun,” engineering sophomore Alanna Buss said.
As their DJ plays EDM tracks, club officers watch and help members improve their fluidity with lights.
“We are all keen on going to electronic music festivals and we might find a group of us going to one, but it is nothing mandatory,” computer science sophomore Corbin Gruber said.
