The Cal Poly men’s tennis team had its season ended this past weekend at the Big West Tournament held at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
The Mustangs ran into the No. 1 seed UC Irvine in the semifinals and were taken down 4-1.
In the doubles round, the No. 2 team of senior Devin Barber and sophomore Garrett Auproux was defeated 6-3, while the No. 3 team of freshmen Axel Damiens and Lucas Lesoeur lost 6-1.
The No. 1 team of sophomores Ben Donovan and Corey Pang, who had accumulated a 17-2 record over the season, saw their match suspended before it ended due to UC Irvine already securing the doubles point after the first two wins.
In singles, the Anteaters continued their dominance.
Despite Damiens securing an easy 6-1, 6-1 victory in the No. 6 singles spot, Donovan, Lesoeur and senior Naveen Beasley were all defeated, giving UC Irvine the four points needed to secure the win.
Pang and Auproux had their matches ended prematurely. Both players were tied with their opponents at one set apiece.
Cal Poly finishes with a 15-10 overall record, and failed to reach the Big West Tournament finals for the first time in four years.
The Mustangs will lose seniors Beasley and Barber, both of whom played roles in Cal Poly’s Big West Championship victories in 2012 and 2014.
The rest of the Mustangs’ roster is filled with underclassmen, however, allowing the future to appear bright.
