Police arrested 14 people during the Steve Aoki concert in the Cal Poly Recreation Center on Friday night, according to University Police Department (UPD) Chief George Hughes.
Thirteen of the arrests came in connection with charges of disorderly conduct, being drunk in public, public intoxication and being under the influence of alcohol or drugs in a public place, Hughes said. Six of those arrested were Cal Poly students.
One arrest was made for drug possession. The individual was carrying ecstasy and was not a Cal Poly student, Hughes said.
Six people, including five Cal Poly students, were taken to the emergency room. Five were for over-intoxication, and one was for a head injury, Hughes said.
Associated Students, Inc., which produced the concert in collaboration with Collective Effort Events and Otter Productions, hired 20 private security guards to staff the event, business administration senior and ASI musical entertainment assistant Gage McGinnis said. EMTs, ASI employees and UPD also worked the event.
“We handled every instance accordingly,” McGinnis said. “If they’re breaking the law, they’ll get arrested. If they were too drunk, they were reported to officers.”
McGinnis said security at the event was adequate, and ASI determined the number of security officers to hire in consultation with a security firm.
“I think for the most part, kids were safe,” McGinnis said.
Eight UPD officers were at the event, the maximum amount available, Hughes said. Hughes said he would try to have more police presence at similar events in the future and would supplement the department’s personnel with officers from other California State University campuses.
